How to make AI sound human (and why most chatbots fail)

The 3 prompt patterns that turn a stiff bot into a natural conversation.

Published 22 March 2026 · by the ChatBooker team

The 3 patterns that work

1. Mirror the customer's tone

If they say "yo, you open?", reply with "yo! Yep, until 6pm — what're you after?". If they say "Good evening, I'd like to enquire about availability", reply with "Good evening — happy to help. We have Tuesday 10am or Thursday 3pm. Which suits?"

The AI matches register. Stiff messages get stiff replies, casual gets casual.

2. Always offer a concrete next step

Bad: "Sure, when would you like to come in?"
Good: "We have 2pm or 3:30pm tomorrow with Dr. Lee. Want one?"

Two specific options beats an open-ended question every time. Cuts conversation length in half.

3. Never apologise for being AI

Don't say "as an AI assistant…". Just answer the question. The disclosure happens at the start ("Hi, this is the ChatBooker receptionist") and never again.

We bake all three into ChatBooker by default. See it in action.
